The Place Called Space program includes artist residencies, exhibitions and publishing enterprises. In such a multiplicity we are keen to work inbetween generally accepted conventions. We are looking for “the space of place” that reveals itself in relations, debates and individuals, every time anew. Through development of the residency concept we aim at creating an interinstitutional platform that would involve museums and centres for contemporary art along with informal collectives.

The objective of Place Called Space is cooperation based upon synergy

– the blend of different perspectives and practices that enables introducing alternative institutional solutions and building a network of vital exchange. We treat the residency program as a platform for long-term activities rather than for production of single artworks. We do not set finish lines, we do not fix ourselves on particular resolutions or places—yet we admit an affinity for free–falling sand the risk of entering territories alien to experience.

Nie wyznaczamy punktu docelowego, nie szukamy konkretnego rozwiązania czy miejsca

choć bliskie jest nam powolne spadanie  i ryzyko znalezienia się na terytorium obcym doświadczeniu. Szukamy przestrzeni miejsca w rozmowach, ludziach, relacjach, przestrzeni stwarzającej się za każdym razem inaczej i często tylko na chwilę.

Place Called Space seeks to establish a regular and at once ceaselessly evolving relation enabling collaboration between participants/actors of contemporary artistic scene who represent various environments and approaches as well as their confrontation with social space.

Stretched between European institutions and artistic circles, it may be likened to a shelf fungus whose functioning largely depends on the tissue of established subjects and artistic groups. In spite of this support, the relation that has taken shape fails to allow institutionalization – in Place Called Space it is people and the concepts they formulate/introduce that matter the most.

At the same time, although short-term units involved in PCS use established structures to some extent, their activities never aim to negotiate a position within found formulas, or to interfere with their fabric but rather to develop a parallel scheme carried out in their own fashion.

Place Called Space not only challenges/targets at the thoroughly investigated fetish of walls, frameworks and boundaries. It also assumes that cultivating a constant relation does not have to automatically determine its institutionalization; it can continue on the basis of an ever ongoing process and negotiation of the conditions of its course. The rigour of the energy lost for maintaining walls and their institutional fetishization, ticking off all the boxes in the programme are replaced by exchange, dialogue, encounter, and circulation of attitudes. The purpose is no longer there; or if there is any purpose it involves focusing on action and problems, in other words it is nothing but a clash itself, a dialectic collision of stances towards co-participants and/or environment; the outcome appears in the course of things.

Orientation towards dialogue entails the greatest possible openness not only to culture in its widest sense, including aspects repressed from mainstream discourse or falling outside any definition, but also science and, most importantly, social space.

In an overwhelmingly schedule-driven era, in times of project-oriented art, instead of thematic areas to explore artists are only given possibilities, an initial set of people and environments while it is up to them to choose where they want to arrive. Therefore, as cross-migration of attitudes provides foundation for Place Called Space, it is not so much inclined to emphasize figures and positions as stimulating flow between particular members of the circulation system. In an attempt to avoid formulation of new institutionalism, we purposely refrain from selecting any leaders. We reject imposed or suggested methods/instrument of action, and the rules of relations in our transitive/morphic collective are constantly negotiated by all participants. In Place Called Space, ego is an unwelcome phenomenon as we believe that taking a step forward is only possible by stifling it.

Place Called Space jest próbą wytworzenia regularnej a jednocześnie stale ewoluującej relacji, dzięki której możliwa jest współpraca reprezentujących odmienne środowiska i postawy uczestników/aktorów sceny sztuki współczesnej, oraz ich konfrontacja z przestrzenią społeczną.

  Rozpięta pomiędzy europejskimi instytucjami i środowiskami sztuki, stanowi rodzaj huby funkcjonującej w sporej mierze dzięki tkance istniejących podmiotów i grup twórczych. Mimo tego oparcia, zaistniała relacja wymyka się jednak instytucjonalizacji – w Place Called Space bowiem najważniejsi są ludzie i proponowane/wnoszone przez nich koncepcje.

  Równocześnie, choć doraźnie jednostki zaangażowane w PCS korzystają po części z istniejących struktur, podejmowane działania nie stanowią próby negocjowania swoich pozycji w ramach zastanych formuł, interwencji w tych krwiobiegach a tworzą propozycję scenariusza równoległego, realizowanego na ich własnych prawach.

Place Called Space nie tylko uderza/celuje w szeroko przepracowany już fetysz murów, ram i granic. Zakłada również, że formułowanie stałej relacji, nie musi za sobą automatycznie determinować jej instytucjonalizacji, że może ona istnieć w formie ciągłej, oparta wyłącznie na ciągłym procesie, na negocjacji warunków samego przepływu. W miejsce rygoru energii wytracanej na utrzymania murów i ich instytucjonalnej fetyszyzacji, wypełniania programu ujawnia się wymiana, dialog, spotkanie, przepływ postaw. Następuje koniec celu, jeśli w ogóle istnieje cel to jest nim skupienie na działaniu i podejmowanych problemach a zatem nim nic innego jak samo zderzenie, dialektyczne ścieranie pozycji wobec współuczestników i/oraz otoczenia, efekt ujawnia się w trakcie.

Ukierunkowanie na dialog, zakłada również możliwie szerokie otwarcie pola, nie tylko na  szerzej rozumianą kulturę,  w tym jej wyparte z mainstream’owego dyskursu lub wymykające się definicjom obszary ale też naukę i co najważniejsze – przestrzeń społeczną.    

W dobie wszechobecnej programowości, projektowości w sztuce, w miejsce obszaru tematycznego, który mieliby przepracowywać artyści, zapewniane są jedynie możliwości, proponowana wyjściowa konfiguracja osób i środowisk a docelowe pole zostaje oddane w ich ręce. Dlatego też, tak jak z założenia Place Called Space opiera się na krzyżowej migracji postaw, ukierunkowane jest nie tyle na podkreślanie figur i pozycji co stymulację przepływu pomiędzy poszczególnymi uczestnikami obiegu. By uniknąć formułowania nowego instytucjonalizmu, z założenia unikamy jasno zarysowanych pozycji liderów. Unikamy narzuconych czy sugerowanych metod / narzędzi działania, a zasady relacji w naszym przechodnim/morficznym kolektywie w formie ciągłej są współnegocjowane przez wszystkich uczestników. Ego w Place Called Space jest figurą niepożądaną, wierzymy, że dopiero jego wygaszanie pozwala postawić krok naprzód.
