Freja Bäckman

Born in Espoo, lives and works in Berlin. She mainly works in different forms of groups and collaborations, not only as a preferred way of working but also a central topic, as in the doing together. The working methods are informed by queerfeminism, using context specific and performative strategies. The formats often being socially engaged, varying from workshops and discussions, to published texts, performative actions and installational work.

Part of several artistic workgroups since 2005. Recent projects include [untitled] at Skills of Economy: The First Session, Helsinki (2015), Land-Institut (2011-ongoing), WIR SPIELEN (WE PLAY), nGbK Berlin (2013), InStructions for EMMA (2013), as part of the exhibition AYE / NAY / ABSENT at EMMA (Espoo Museum of Modern Art). Published “Tarkalleen ottaen työmme on työ”, in: Finnish Art Policy Handbook (2015) and “Es war einmal oder vielleicht war es nicht” and “Wie kann ich auf die Documenta überleben?” – latter with Sara Hossein, in: Finding Something Bad About Mickey Mouse. Über die Arbeit im Studio d(13) für Kids und Teens auf der dOCUMENTA (13) (2013). Since 2014 she is doing a doctorate at the department of Arts at the Aalto University in Helsinki. She holds a M.A. from the Art in Context programme at the Berlin University of the Arts.
